In Art, our School's Intent is particularly upheld in the way we:

  • Support and enable independence, building confidence through an established core foundation of skills:
  • Develop students’ cultural capital through exploring the world of art and artists, placing them and their work in historical and social contexts.

These are demonstrated through the range of activities we have on offer in each lesson, where guided independent study is the norm. We focus on the knowledge and application of a rich, ambitious subject specific vocabulary.

The quality of interactions between our students is impressive, as they support each other through advice and evaluation, so they are able to assume responsibility for their own behaviour for learning.

Key Stage 3

Our aims are those outlined in the National Curriculum:

  • To produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  • To become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  • To evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • To know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

The curriculum is carefully structured, so that there are progressive levels of challenge and ambitious expectations in each year.

From Year 7, students will undertake practical activities across a range of media, consider the role of art in the wider world and to extend their knowledge of core skills and concepts.

By the end of Year 9, our students will be able to develop and explore their own ideas confidently based upon artist research and investigation, producing personal responses. They will also be able to make an informed decision whether to pursue GCSE art.
