The Course
The course content is split into six teaching modules:

  • Module 1 – Development of practical skills in Biology.
  • Module 2 – Foundations in Biology.
  • Module 3 – Exchange and transport.
  • Module 4 – Biodiversity, evolution and disease.
  • Module 5 – Communication, homeostasis and energy.
  • Module 6 – Genetics, evolution and ecosystems.

 

Year 12
During Year 12, you will study modules 1, 2, 3 and 4


Year 13
During Year 13, you will study modules 1, 5 and 6


GCSE requirements: A minimum of a B in GCSE sciences is essential (N.B grades must be
achieved in all written components of the GCSE science exams) A minimum of a B in Maths is
desirable. (10% of the new A level will be assessing mathematical skill.)


Examinations


A level
Component 1: Biological Processes – 37%
(100 marks, 2 hour 15 minutes written paper)


Component 1 assesses content from modules 1, 2, 3 and 5.
Component 2: Biological Diversity – 37%
(100 marks, 2 hour 15 minutes written paper)


Component 2 assesses content from modules 1, 2, 4 and 6.
Component 3: Unified Biology – 26%
(70 marks, 1 hour 30 minutes written paper)


Component 3 assesses content from all modules.
Component 4: Practical Endorsement in Biology
(Non exam assessment)


The Practical Endorsement in Biology will be graded Pass or Fail. This will be reported separately.
The Students will complete and keep record of assessed practical tasks throughout the two years.


Enrichment
The course involves a visit to Newton Field Centre.
