Maths and Further Maths are both available for A Level study. Both courses are popular, demanding and well worth the challenge.

There is now only one A-level Maths qualification available and all students will study Pure Mathematics, Statistics and Mechanics.

Pure Mathematics is expected to count for two thirds of the course with Mechanics and Statistics making up a sixth each.

Pure Mathematics

Students will study proof, algebra and functions, coordinate geometry, sequences and series, trigonometry, differentiation, integration and numerical methods.

Quantities and units in mechanics, kinematics, forces and Newton’s laws and moments will be studied.

The topics of statistical sampling, data presentation and interpretation, probability, statistical distributions and statistical hypothesis testing will be covered.

Calculators will be allowed in all exams and the ability to use of them for more sophisticated calculations will be tested.  There will also be more emphasis on problem solving across all elements.

Enrichment Opportunities

  • Year 12 and Year 13, Senior Maths Challenge and Senior Team Challenge.
  • Christmas lecture for Year 12 students.
  • Opportunity to run a Maths society - student led lunchtime sessions aimed at wider reading and delivery of Mathematical theory/application.

Before studying the course, students are strongly advised to complete summer work to consolidate GCSE knowledge. Students will sit a test in their first Pure lesson in order to help assess whether they are able to cope with the demands of A-Level.
