Rugby Success

Year 7 Rugby County Champions

Last week the U12 Rugby Squad became County Champions in a hard fought contest at Northampton School for Boys. The squad had qualified for the finals by winning the District Tournament before Christmas.

Since then the squad has developed and become more confident in their style of play and gelled well together. There is a good mix of experienced boys who already play club rugby and those who were new to the game in September. Selection proved difficult with 25 boys representing the school and only being able to select 16 players.

Bishop won the pool with good wins against Campion and Ferrers Schools. The waterfall style of the finals tournament meant they faced the winner of the other pool: Moulton School.

Taking control of the final from the start, Bishop turned the ball over from a tackle from the kick off. Going through the phases and recycling well, they eventually moved the ball wide to score. Possession was evenly contested but Bishop managed to have the territorial advantage. This pressure told once more where some strong carries by the forward, allowed the ball to be passed wide once more and another score followed. After a further score, by half-time Bishop were in a comfortable postition.

Moulton rallied in the second half and scored an early try which meant 'game on'. Good defence by Bishop repelled further efforts from the Moulton attack, and it was unfortunate that further chances were not converted by Bishop.

The final score was 15 - 5 to Bishop.

The whole squad should feel very proud of themselves as this is a fantastic achievement. Once again, I must also mention the players who could not play in the finals as it is their commitment and performance that creates the competition for places, and will hopefully put this year group in a good position for the season ahead.

The Finals Squad: Ioan Allen 7C, Jeffery Agyemang-Boateng 7Y, Ewan Clee 7Y, Jonty Cullinan 7Y, Christian Dalziel 7P, Freddie Drake-Lee 7D (Captain), Hal Eastwood 7P, Sam Grant 7D, Charlie Howard 7Y, Matthew Jewell 7C, Rayaan Kausar 7E, O'Ryan Kombo 7P, Alex Neeson 7Y, Thomas Reynolds 7W, Joe Wiggins 7G.

Other Squad Players: Matteo Di Micco 7G, George Hockley 7C, Aiden Jackson 7D, Oliver Reading 7C, Ieuan Roden 7Y, Charlie Singlehurst 7W, Edward Smith-Wilds 7P

Year 8 Rugby 7s

For the sixth successive year, Bishop U13s took place in the Saints Regional 7s Tournament held at Franklins Gardens. The tournament has grown in size over the years and now attracts schools from Northants, Leics, Oxon and Suffolk. The squad was fortunate once again to benefit from some specialist coaching before the tournament from the Saints Community Coaching Staff.

The first pool game was against Malcolm Arnold Academy which saw the squad play some great rugby. They won the first game and then played against Finborough Prep 2 from Suffolk - a game Bishop again won.

As Bishop had now won Pool 5, it meant they qualified for the top finals pool. This was an acheivement in itself and a significant step up. The top pool saw the squad pitted against some strong schools: Finborough Prep 1, Wellingborough, and Spratton Hall and a very large and physical Northampton School for Boys side.

Despite the challenge, the boys approached each game with positivity and the desire to do their best. In each game they scored and in some games there were a number of well worked tries. Nevertheless, it proved a hard 'afternoon in the office' for Bishop. Overall, they finished in 5th postition out of 15 schools which is pretty respectable. The boys should be commended on their resilience - certain players never taking a backward step, despite the challenge put before them.

It was a pleasure spending the day with you gentlemen!
